Classic Red Velvet Cookies. From Lisa Nicklow Davis, League City. They're supremely soft and chewy with the perfect classic "red velvet" chocolaty vanilla flavor, and they're so easy to make. Red velvet is such a classic Southern flavor. Of course when most people think of red velvet, they think of the ultra-classic red velvet cake -- deep red layers of cake loaded with creamy cream cheese frosting. It's a flavor so popular in the South, it makes its appearance at many a' wedding -- most typically as the groom's cake.
Unlike many red velvet cookie recipes that call for softened butter, you'll actually use melted butter (or coconut oil, to keep them dairy-free!) in this recipe.
I love using melted butter for two reasons: a it makes your healthy red velvet chocolate chip cookies softer and chewier and b it's much faster (and easier!) than waiting for.
Red Velvet, if you weren't sure, is a mix of chocolate and vanilla - and red.

The red colour typically comes from the mix of red food colouring, vinegar and buttermilk. These are classic, and feature in my Red Velvet Cake and Red Velvet Cupcakes. When it comes to cookies though, you can't treat them quite the same way, otherwise it wouldn. The tanginess of buttermilk is a key component in getting the flavor of red velvet correctly.
Classic Red Velvet Cookies step by step
- In a bowl add butter & powdered sugar & whisk it hard till it becomes light and fluffy..
- Now take another bowl, add maida, baking powder, salt, vanilla essence, cocoa powder. Mix everything well. Now add the vinegar+soda mixture to it & again mix everything well. Now add the butter+sugar mixture to the dry ingredients and mix everything well to form a soft dough..
- At last add few drops of red colour to it & Knead the dough very well to get a proper red colour. Lastly add some white choco-chips to it and mix them well with the dough..
- Now grease a plate with some ghee. Make small balls out of the dough. Flatten them a bit. Decorate it with some white choco-chips & keep it in a refrigerator for about 10 mins..
- Till that time, take a large kadai for pre-heating. Cover it's base with some salt & keep a stand over it. Cover it and pre-heat it in a medium flame for 3 mins & in low flame for about 5 mins..
- Then remove the cookie tray from the refrigerator & keep it inside the kadai, over the stand. Cover the kadai & bake them in a low flame for about half an hour. Use the same method with the rest of the batches. After 30 mins. remove the plate/tray from the kadai, leave it for as it is for about 15 mins then store the cookies in an air-tight container so that it remains fresh for long..
In order to achieve this in these red velvet keto cookies, I used both a little vinegar and cream of tartar. This combination worked perfectly and gave these cookies the classic red velvet flavor I was going for. Red velvet cake lovers, these recipes are for you!
